Join us as we review the highs and lows of the last week, as well as previewing the week ahead.

Week 6: 24-30 November

Week Record: 1-3

Overall Record: 12-9. 7th in the Western Conference.

Games Played and Results:

L - 92 - 114 Vs Houston Rockets

W - 112 - 100 Vs Sacramento Kings

L - 119 - 123 Vs OKC Thunder

L - 112 - 130 Vs Denver Nuggets

Centre of The Sun

The final results may not show it, but I think the Suns performed pretty well this week.

They were always the underdogs, apart from the Kings game, but they stuck to their principles on the defensive end and those principles brought them back against the Thunder. The game looked over mid-way through the 3rd, but then they turned it up a notch, earning themselves the Wildcard slot in the NBA Cup.

I thought we'd come away with a win against the Rockets, but Thompson's trajectory was on full display. I also think we had a few chances that were wasted by Dillon's insistence on trying to personally destroy his previous team.

Considering the injuries we've dealt with - Grayson, Ryan and Goodwin, plus Mark missing the Rockets and Nuggets games due to them being the 2nd night of a back-to-back, and Book struggling, I feel proud of the team. What speaks volumes for them is that they came out against the Kings, the only game where they were the favourites, and took care of business.

Other Suns Stuff

NBA Cup Knock-out Round

Even though the Suns lost to OKC knocking them out of an automatic spot in the knock-out round, they earned the Western Conference Wildcard spot. This was thanks to their better point differential over the Grizzlies, who also finished with a 3-1 record.

The downside is that we face the Thunder again in OKC, as our quarter final game on 10th December.

Superstar Watch (Season stats):

Devin Booker - 25.7 Points, 4.4 Rebounds, 6.9 Assists, 1.0 Steals, 45.5 FG%, 31.1 3PT FG% & 3.9 Turnovers

Scorching Suns:

Collin Gillespie

Yep, Collin again. He continues to rise and impress every game.

For the 2nd week in a row he set a new career high in points, twice, with 21 and 24 points and hit a career high 6 3-pointers en route to the 24 points.

With teams walling up against Book, Collin got his 1st start vs OKC, where he got those 24 points. He has been our most consistent scorer for a couple of weeks now and it's been fantastic to watch his progress.

His stats for the week:

18.3 Points, 2.3 Rebounds, 4.3 Assists, 1.8 Steals, 50.0 FG% & 50.0 3PT FG%

Mark Williams

Mark also gets this spot again after another strong week. He only appeared in 2 of the 4 games, due to him still resting on the 2nd night of back-to-backs and we had 2 of those this week.

He upped his offensive rebound efforts this week, grabbing 9 against the Kings! These led to more points and more assists from the big man.

Shane Young wrote this interesting article highlighting Mark's surprising defence, it's definitely worth a read: https://www.nba.com/suns/news/mark-williams-is-quietly-dominating-for-the-phoenix-suns

His stats for the week:

17.0 Points, 15.0 Rebounds (6.5 Off. Rebounds), 2.0 Assists, 1.5 Steals, 0.5 Blocks & 66.7 FG%

Struggling Suns:

Nick Richards

Nick has been awful this week. With Mark missing time, as previously explained, we needed Nick to just be solid, but no, he's been a minus all week. The eye test support the stats, as he has made silly mistakes and been non-existent on the defensive end. To give him some credit, he did have 11 rebounds vs the Rockets. His minutes have matched his performances, rock bottom.

His stats for the week:

2.3 Points, 3.8 Rebounds, 0.3 Assists, 0.0 Steals, 0.8 Blocks & 50.0 FG% (8 total attempts)

Stat Line(s) of the Week:

Mark Williams Vs Sacramento Kings

Mark took full advantage of the Kings missing Sabonis in this one, grabbing 9 offensive rebounds. That's the same as the whole of the Kings combined and 1 more than the rest of the Suns combined.

His board work led to 12 shot attempts and 4 assists. On the defensive end he also had a season-high tying 3 steals.

Game stat line:

21 Points, 16 Rebounds (9 Off. Rebounds), 4 Assists, 3 Steals, 1 Block & 9/12 FGs (75.0%)

Rookie Watch (Season stats):

Khaman Maluach - 9 games, 0 starts

1.4 Points, 0.7 Rebounds, 0.1 Assists, 0.0 Steals, 0.4 Blocks, 37.5 FG%, 0.0 3PT FG% & 0.6 Turnovers

Rasheer Fleming - 10 games, 0 starts

2.1 Points, 1.3 Rebounds, 0.2 Assists, 0.1 Steals, 0.1 Blocks, 31.8 FG%, 23.1 3PT FG% & 0.3 Turnovers

Koby Brea - 2 game

2.0 Points, 0.5 Rebounds, 1.0 Assists, 0.0 Steals, 0.0 Blocks, 33.3 FG%, 0.0 3PT FG% & 0.0 Turnovers

Upcoming Games:

The Lakers go into our game on a 7-game win streak behind some excellent early season play from Austin Reeves and of course their Superstars Lebron James and

D̶e̶a̶n̶d̶r̶e̶ ̶A̶y̶t̶o̶n̶ 🤭 Luka Doncic.

Doncic has been on a crazy streak and averaging 35 points this season, the highest of his career. LeBron is just 4 games deep into his season and working his way back in, but the scoring load has been bolstered by Austin Reeves, averaging a 28 points per game!

We played the Rockets last week and they were without Durant. He is back with the team now after his absence, so we're expecting an even tougher game this time round.

Prediction:

I think the heartbreak will continue this week, and we'll sadly lose both games.
